WANLOCKHEAD COMMUNITY BUYOUT UPDATE
PUBLIC MEETING ON SATURDAY 10TH DECEMBER and SECOND MEETING WITH BUCCLEUCH ON POTENTIAL BUYOUT
Following our last update on the 31st August, you may have seen the village making the headlines again as a few residents travelled up North to investigate how community land buyouts have improved life and economic opportunities in their communities. A detailed report will be given at the next public meeting, but in the meantime a few press articles about the fact finding trip to the community-owned estates up North can be found at www.WanlockheadCommunityTrust.org
Following the Community Consultation Report which was presented at the public meeting in Wanlockhead Community Centre on the 17th July, the next step is to convert that community vision into a final proposal for the village in the form of a Feasibility Study and a Business Plan for a potential community-owned Wanlockhead. The group has been working closely over the past few months with the Scottish Land Fund, which has provided valuable advice as well as the funding needed to commission those reports. It is expected that before the end of the year the consultants will come to Wanlockhead to meet the village at a public meeting. The Feasibility Study and Business Plan are expected to be completed before summer 2017 and the village will be asked afterwards whether we as a community want to go ahead with a land buyout for the village.
Community Land Scotland and the Scottish Government's Right to Buy department have also been providing valuable legal expertise regarding pre-buyout matters, including the right for communities to register an interest to potentially purchase Estate land before any formal buyout ever takes place. This is a legal right which ensures -whether the village votes to progress a buyout proposal or not- that the village is notified and given an option to purchase Estate land should the Estate ever decide to put the land around Wanlockhead in the open market.
In the meantime, a second exploratory meeting was held between representatives of Buccleuch Estates and the Wanlockhead Community Trust on Tuesday 11 October to continue discussing a potential buyout of land in and around Wanlockhead. Such a buyout would ideally include the areas that local residents identified as an asset to the village in the Community Consultation Report. Buccleuch Estates have already suggested that they would be willing to sell the land within the village under their ownership, as well as the former smelter areas, but further discussions are still needed before a final proposal is presented to the village. A detailed report about the discussions with Buccleuch will be given at the next public meeting on Saturday 10th December at 7pm at Wanlockhead Community Centre.

The main topic at this meeting will be to report back to the community on the second meeting held with Buccleuch Estates on the 11th of October. These public meetings are also an opportunity for everybody to get involved and give your ideas on what the community could do with the land if a buyout was successful.
